If it seems like the summer is moving along quickly this year, you're not alone. There's still time to enjoy the outdoors with your family between now and Labor Day.

Northern Virginia and DC are near plenty of beaches, state parks and other destinations for a day trip. That's why we've rounded up a bucket list of locations for a summer day trip. So pack up the car, gather the kids and head out to one of these destinations.

  • Lake Anna State Park: This lake is a popular watering hole for Northern Virginians looking for a quick getaway. The lake has a swimming area, boating, hiking and more. About 86 miles from DC
  • Colonial Beach: This is one of the only remaining beach towns on the Potomac River. Along with activities like swimming, crabbing and more, Colonial Beach offers a rich history. George Washington's birthplace is nearby, as well as Robert E. Lee's childhood home. About 65 miles from DC
  • Harper's Ferry, West Virginia: Just across the border from Virginia is this charming town blending heritage sites and nature. From battle sites to historic sites, there's enough to do that you'll want to return. About 63 miles from DC
  • Shenandoah National Park: Around 200,000 acres of protected land and some of the best views in Virginia await. You'll have plentiful hiking options with waterfalls and vistas, or you could enjoy the view in your car along Skyline Drive. About 75 miles from DC
  • Lake Arrowhead Recreation Park: The Shenandoah Valley has more than spectacular mountain views. Lake Arrowhead offers swimming with lifeguards, as well as fishing, boating and concessions. About 87 miles from DC
  • Sandy Point State Park, Maryland: This state park is just one exit before the busy Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The beach allows various activities, from swimming and picnicking to fishing, crabbing and boating. About 37 miles from DC
  • Chesapeake Beach, Maryland: This Chesapeake Bay town has beaches, waterfront dining, shopping and a water park. About 35 miles from DC
