Golden was taken to Bellevue Hospital in "serious but stable condition," police said. The victim was undergoing surgery Sunday afternoon, authorities said at an afternoon news conference.

Police said that there was no evidence that the explosion was related to terrorism. K-9 police dogs were checking the park for any other explosives, police said.

Police did not name the victim who was injured, but the young man was identified as Connor Golden by several news outlets, including the New York Daily News and the New York Post. A Connor Golden is listed as someone who took part in activities in 2015 at Oakton High School in Fairfax County.

"His foot is all but gone," a witness told the News.

Police said they do not consider the victim and his two male friends "to be a part of constructing this object."

CNN reports the explosive appeared to be "homemade," that was left in the area; Golden reportedly stepped on the material and it exploded. Officials said it may have been homemade fireworks.

The funeral for Elie Wiesel was taking place nearby at the Fifth Avenue Synagogue on East 62nd Street.

The park was not evacuated. Several witnesses reported hearing a boom at the park.

A statement issued by the University of Miami, where Golden is a student, said: "The University of Miami's thoughts and prayers are with Connor Golden as he recovers from this horrific accident that took place in Central Park Sunday morning. We will provide Connor and his family with complete support through his recovery and rehabilitation."
