Snow In NoVa Forecast: See Latest Timing, Accumulation Estimates

As colder temperatures appear to be here to stay, a wintry mix and chance of snow are in the forecast.

Colder temperatures are starting to linger and bring chances of snow and other wintry precipitation in Northern Virginia, according to the latest forecasts. Chances of a wintry mix with snow will appear several times this week.

On Tuesday, much of the Northeast could see its first accumulating snow of the season, AccuWeather predicts. However, a warmer side to the storm system could mean a soaking rain for the Interstate 95 corridor into the South.

Northern Virginia sits on the border of where AccuWeather expects either a mix of rain, ice and snow or just rain. The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang says a wintry mix could materialize in the D.C. region before dawn into Tuesday, bringing a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain north and west of the Beltway. Forecasters say the wintry mix could create slippery locations in western Loudoun County, northern Fauquier and several parts of Maryland to the north. To the east and south of the Beltway, a wintry mix could be short-lived and change to rain with minimal or no accumulation.

Western Loudoun County and additional counties west of the DC metro region are under a winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service's Baltimore-Washington Office. The areas under the winter weather advisory could expect weather impacts to the Tuesday morning commute.

Forecasters say the precipitation is likely to begin as snow before mixing with and turning to sleet and freezing rain. Areas south of US-50 and Interstate 66 are more likely to see rain as temperatures increase in the morning.

The other chance of winter weather will arrive near the end of the week. The Capital Weather Gang says there's another chance of a wintry mix Friday night into Saturday. However, the chance of that mix turning to rain depends on how much mild air will move north.
