Major Verizon Outage Ongoing In Northern Virginia, D.C.

Many local Verizon customers experienced disruptions to voice and data services on Wednesday afternoon.

Verizon customers in parts of Northern Virginia continue to experience disruptions to their wireless voice and data services on Wednesday afternoon. According to Downdetector, a website that collects user-submitted reports of outages, the Washington, D.C. metro area is among the areas most impacted by the Verizon outage.

Verizon acknowledged the issue publicly on Wednesday afternoon, posting a statement on X regarding the service disruption.

"We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers," Verizon said on the social media platform.

The company said its engineering teams were actively involved in addressing the problem.

In Northern Virginia, the Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management said the outage was resulting in potential service disruptions, including placing calls to the county’s 911 system.

"The county is actively coordinating with wireless providers as they work to identify and resolve the issue as quickly as possible," officials wrote.

Loudoun County Fire Rescue also warned residents that the outage may disrupt emergency communications.

In Washington, D.C., the city's emergency notification system sent out a message to residents saying that the Verizon outage was "nationwide."

"If you have an emergency and can not connect using your Verizon Wireless device, please connect using a device from another carrier, a landline, or go to a police district or fire station to report the emergency," the AlertDC system told recipients.

Other U.S. cities where significant outages were reported include Philadelphia, New York City, Miami and Atlanta.

In a follow-up tweet, Verizon said: "Verizon engineering teams are continuing to address today's service interruptions. Our teams remain fully deployed and are focused on the issue. We understand the impact this has on your day and remain committed to resolving this as quickly as possible."
