Photos: Walk On The Hill, Garden Show

Annual event draws crowd to Windover Heights Historic District

Residents roamed the rolling roads around Windover Avenue on Sunday for the town's 38th annual Walk on the Hill, which draws residents each spring to admire the homes, gardens, landscaping and architecture of one of the town's historic neighborhoods.

The event, co-sponsored by Historic Vienna, Inc. and the Town of Vienna Department of Parks and Recreation, leads visitors through the neighborhoods of the Windover Heights Historic District. Friends, neighbors and curious passerbys are free to roam any yards and gardens marked by a yellow "yard open" sign, revealing man-made ponds and pools, outdoor kitchens, antique cars and unusual garden and architecture elements.

A recurring highlight is the Marcey Cabin, a log structure built in 1843 in Arlington that stood on its original lot until the 1980s, when the land was sold for townhouses. The Sloan family of Orchard Street in Vienna saved the house by moving it to the edge of its yard, where it remains today.

Even before it founded the walk in 1971, the Ayrhill Garden Club started its tradition of a flower show in the 1950s. It's one that now continues alongside the walk at the Green Hedges School.

Twenty five active members entered either horticulture, designs, or both in this year's show, said member Susan Stillman. Selections ranged from the "tin man" arrangement, a visual tribute to the Wizard of Oz, to themed table settings and a compost display.
