Police Log: Woman Assaulted, Hits Back with Umbrella

The following arrest information was supplied by the Vienna Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Though a woman chased a man who allegedly assaulted her, she was unable apprehend the suspect, who disappeared around Ayr Hill Avenue.

The woman reported that while walking at 1 p.m. July 20  through Glyndon Park, she was assaulted by a man. She said she hit the man with her open umbrella and he fled the area on foot.

Despite chasing him, she lost sight of the assailant as he ran toward Ayr Hill Avenue NE. She could not provide police with a description of the suspect.

  • An employee of reported that between 9 a.m. March 25 and 2:44 p.m. July 25, a former employee had taken her client list when she left the company. Police suggested she contact her attorney
  • A resident reported between 8:30 p.m. June 29 and 8:30 p.m. June 30, the fence behind her home on Ross Drive SW had been damaged by tree limbs that fell during the derecho. The tree belongs to the neighbor, so she sent a letter to the neighbor requesting he remove the branches, but he has yet to respond. 
  • A resident reported between 3:50 p.m. July 12 and 2:50 p.m. July 23, someone attempted to transfer his benefits with the Social Security Administration into a different account. Police are investigating the case. 
  • A citizen reported between noon July 17 and 9:16 a.m. July 20, his father had written several checks to contractor for repairs to his home on Cottage Street. When police spoke with the contractor, the contractor said the homeowner had agreed to all repairs. Police are investigating the case. 
  • An employee of, 215 Maple Ave E, reported between 7:45 p.m. July 17 and 9:25 p.m July 19, a customer purchased a phone card, but returned later to report the card was not activated. Employees told the customer they needed to activate the card through the company that issued it. The customer returned again and convinced another employee to activate the card. Police are investigating the case. 
  • At 12:54 p.m. July 20, a man came to Vienna Police Headquarters, 215 Center Street S, to drop off a box containing four kittens reportedly found in his attic. The man said they did not belong to him. The kittens were taken to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.
  • A resident reported at 4:27 p.m. July 20 when she attempted to refinance her home she discovered an account had been opened up in her name, without her knowledge.
  • At 5:12 p.m. July 20 at Wolftrap Hotel, 430 Maple Ave SW, an employee reported someone was trying to rent a room but the person, when previously renting a room at the establishment, had been agressive and disruptive toward other customers. Accordingly, the man was told he couldn't rent a room and asked to leave.
  • At 9:19 p.m. July 20, police were approached by a man requesting to go to a local hospital for treatment. The treatment was non-life threatening. Police took the man to the hospital.
  • A resident reported at 9:53 p.m. July 20 that they smelled a strong chemical odor when they returned to their home in the 500 block of  Windover Avenue. The fire department responded and found several containers of cleaning solution in an upstairs bedroom. The resident said he shares the home with several people, and the chemicals belonged to another tenant. The fire department removed the chemicals.
  • During a traffic stop at 3:35 a.m. July 21 on Nutley Street, police suspected a driver was impaired. Officers arrested Emmet Jones, 42, of Sterling for driving while intoxicated. Jones was taken to Vienna Police Headquarters for  breath analysis and then to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. He was held on a $2,500.00 bond.
  • A man reported at 12:10 p.m. July 21 that he and his adult daughter were arguing because she refused to take the dog out. The argument became heated when the daughter locked herself and the dog in her bedroom. Police responded and the daughter agreed to leave the house on Thelma Circle.  
  • A woman reported while visiting her friend between 12:30 and 1:03 p.m. on Park Srreet NE, someone had slashed all the tires on her vehicle. She reported no issues with friends or coworkers.
  • A resident reported at 3:33 p.m. July 21 they had previously contracted with an air conditioning repairman to service the air conditioning system in his home on Timber Lane, but it had already stopped working again. The resident returned to reapir the system, but the pair got into a fight over the quality of the work completed by the man. After responding, the repairmen agreed to replace the circuit breaker, and the homeowner agreed to allow the repairmen to remove a part he did not pay for.
  • A customer at the Wolftrap Hotel reported between 7 p.m. July 21 and 3 p.m. July 22 the door to her room was not locking properly. When switched rooms she discovered her digital camera was missing. Police are investigating the case. 
  • A resident at 8:15 p.m. July 21 reported two brothers were involved in an argument that turned physical on Knoll Street. The older brother told police the argument started when the younger brother became disrespectful to him and his sister. After police spoke with the boys, they agreed to stop fighting.
  • Police found two men at 2:13 a.m. July 22 who said they were having a bad night and thought tearing down a stop sign near Tapawingo Road and Glyndon Street SW would be fun. Police arrested Collin John Sekas, 19, and Ryan Francis O’Connor, 21, of Fairfax Station for destruction of property and drunk in public. They were taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and held there until they were sober.
  • A woman reported at 8:35 p.m. July 22 her daughter-in-law struck her in the head with the freezer door at a residence on Cedar Lane. When police arrived, the woman said she was shutting the freezer door and did not notice her mother-in-law walking toward the refrigerator. The mother-in-law said she did not want to pursue charges and she would forgive the daughter-in-law.
  • A citizen reported a small child was walking alone at 8:46 a.m. July 23 along Commons Drive. Police found the child and where it lived and discovered an older brother was babysitting and said his little brother went outside without his permission. When police contacted the mother of the boys she said she would fix the door so the child would not be able open it.
  • A woman said while landscapers were working at 12:12 p.m. July 23 on Westwood Drive, they found a dead deer in a neighbor's yard with an arrow nearby. The town's animal control officer is investigating the case. 
  • A woman reported at 1:39 p.m. July 23 her daugher was running in the street on Thelma Circle, screaming and crying. The mother told police her daughter needed medical assistance, but when police responded and spoke with the adult daughter, they determined she was not in need of medical treatment.
  • A woman reported at 8:20 a.m. she was concerned her mother-in-law was not taking care of her home and was neglecting her son. Police are investigating the case. 
  • An employee reported at 1:23 p.m. July 24 he suspected an individual had been using the Shell station, at 545 Maple Avenue NW, as an address to sell vehicles. The individual has been told he is not allowed to sell vehicles at the sation, the employee said. The individual stopped for a short time, police said. The employee told police he saw the individual take a van, remove the plates and park it in front of the 7-Eleven.
  • A citizen reported at 8:51 p.m. July 25 the smell of gas was emitting from the area of Nutley Street and Malcolm Road SW. Police arrived and determined the odor was coming from a vacant house on Malcolm Road SW. Rescue workers went into the homeand shut off the gas, ventilating the home. 
  • At 1:35 a.m. July 26, an employee of 7-Eleven, 427 Maple Ave E, police reported a customer entered the business and left without paying for two cans of Copenhagen tobacco. The employee did not wish to pursue charges.
