Vienna Man Faces Serial Bank Robbery Charges: Police

David Canavan, 53, is facing charges in three area bank robberies, according to police.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- Fairfax County Police say a Vienna area man is facing charges of robbing three banks in the area between June 1 and Tuesday.

David Canavan, 53, of Vienna, was transported Tuesday afternoon to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center (ADC) and charged with robbery, according to Fairfax County Police.

On Tuesday, at approximately 3:45 p.m., a robbery occurred at the Wells Fargo Bank, at 2903 Gallows Road in Fairfax County. A lookout was broadcast and officers from the McLean District saturated the area, set up a perimeter, and located and detained a suspect a short time later, police said.

The suspect said he left behind an explosive device; the incident tied up traffic for hours closing down Gallows Road between about 4-7:30 p.m. while authorities investigated the package.

The Fairfax County Police Department and the FBI Washington Field Office Violent Crimes Task Force also compared Tuesday's robbery with previous bank robberies in the area this summer and say Canavan is believed to be the same person responsible for two other robberies in Fairfax County, on June 1 and July 5.

Those bank robberies took place at banks in the Seven Corners and Bailey's Crossroads area, east of Tuesday's robbery.

  • June 1: A suspect robbed the BB&T Bank Wednesday, June 1 shortly before 4 p.m. at 8416 Arlington Blvd. That suspect also said he was leaving behind a bomb in a backpack; that also tied up traffic for hours.
  • July 5: A suspect robbed the TD Bank Tuesday, July 5 at about 3:25 p.m. at 6198 Arlington Blvd. That suspect also said he had a bomb in a backpack. That incident also tied up traffic as police officers investigated the package.

Fairfax County Police Department Major Crimes detectives obtained three robbery warrants Tuesday that were served on Canavan and he is currently held without bond at the Adult Detention Center, police said.
