New Park: Polk Avenue Property Purchased for Open Space

City purchases 2.34-acre site for a future park.

The city has purchased a 2.34-acre property on the west end of Polk Ave. to use as open space or a park, city officials announced.

The land, at 5325 Polk Ave., is heavily wooded and on a steep hill, about two-tenths of a mile from James K. Polk Elementary School.

The property cost the city $1.9 million. Funds came from the Department of Defense ($1.5 million) and $400,000 from the City of Alexandria’s Open Space funds.

The city acquired the property at the recommendation of the Beauregard Rezoning Advisory Group. It was one of eight sites in the West End city residents nominated for potential parks.

Later this year, city staff will start accepting input to “consider the future use for the new park,” according to a press release. “This public process will include community outreach to provide input on any future improvements to the site.”
