National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony: Friday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. on The Ellipse, the grassy area south of the White House. Nationally known entertainers and a military band will perform and President Obama will give talk of peace in the U.S. and the world. The ticket lottery for the tree lighting is now closed, but musical performances by volunteer choirs, bands and dancers will be given nightly from Wednesday, Dec. 11 to Sunday, Dec. 22. Tuesday-Friday performances will be from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday performances will run from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Santa's Workshop will be open Monday-Thursday 4-6:30 p.m. and 7-9:30 p.m.; Friday-Sunday 12:30-4:30 p.m. and 5:30-9:30 p.m.; Dec. 24: 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

The 43rd annual Scottish Christmas Walk Parade is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Old Town Alexandria. Events begin on Friday with the Christmas Marketplace from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the George Washington Masonic Memorial. Read more about this weekend's events

Del Ray Tree Lighting and Luminarias: Saturday, Dec. 6, 6 p.m. Alexandria’s Del Ray community will come together at the corner of Mount Vernon and E. Oxford Avenues to sing carols light the neighborhood tree. Santa is expected to drop by and will likely be available for photos. Mount Vernon Avenue will be lit with hundreds of luminarias in memory of Nancy Dunning.
