With a National Weather Service winter weather advisory in place for Thursday for Alexandria, officials at Dominion Power, Alexandria City Public Schools and the Virginia Department of Transportation have their eyes glued to the weather forecasts.

As of 4 p.m., forecasts varied. The National Weather Service revised its snow accumulation forecast down to 4 inches from an earlier 5 inches across the region.

The Capital Weather Gang said "Because it’s not clear exactly how much moisture will make it into the region, snow accumulation is a huge question mark. For most of the D.C. area, we think just some conversational flakes to a couple inches is most likely, with more south and southwest of town and less to the north."

Le-Ha Anderson, a spokeswoman with Dominion Power, said the company is making sure their trucks are gassed up and ready to respond if there are any power outages. She said the utility company has a team of meteorologists that are tracking the storm for them.

“Wet snow with some wind could cause some power outages,” Anderson said. “We do urge our customers to be prepared with an emergency plan with phone numbers and nonperishable food just in case there are some outages.”

If the snow causes power outages, you can click here to view the outage map on Dominion Power’s website or you can go to Dom.com on your cell phones and tablets.

You should always report a power outage to Dominion Power, even if you think your neighbor has already reported it. Dominion's phone number is 1-866-DOM-HELP (1-866-366-4357).

VDOT Ready to Pre-Treat Roads Thursday Morning

As the forecast changes, VDOT will have 650 trucks ready to roll out Thursday morning to pre-treat interstates across the area, agency spokeswoman Jenny McCord said.

If the forecast changes again and more snow hits the region, McCord said VDOT is prepared to bring in extra manpower.
