Coastal Flooding Possible In Prince William County On Friday And Saturday

A Coastal Flood Warning was issued for Prince William County as a storm is expected to bring up to two inches of rain to the area on Friday.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — A Coastal Flood Warning was issued for the Prince William County area by the National Weather Service. The warning took effect at 5 a.m. on Saturday and is scheduled to expire at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

The National Weather Service said that Friday's rain showers are expected to bring up to two inches of rain to the area. In low-lying areas, this could lead to two or three feet of inundation above ground level.

As a result of the possible flooding, some roads may be closed, the National Weather Service said. Some low-lying or coastal areas and structures may also be impacted by the weather.

To help protect residents as they weather the storm, Prince William County's Emergency Information department offered the following tips.

  • Ensure you have a way to receive alerts and weather warnings
  • Do not drive through flooded roadways – Turn Around; Don’t Drown!
  • Secure loose objects, like lawn furniture.
  • If you own a boat, make sure it is firmly secured to your dock or lift.
  • Charge mobile phones and other electronic devices in case of a power outage.
  • If your home or business is on the shoreline, be prepared to evacuate if water reaches the building. If water enters your home or business, call 9-1-1.
  • Residents are encouraged to report storm damage like downed trees or flooding online. More serious impacts, like downed power lines, blocked roadways, or rapidly rising water levels, can be reported to 9-1-1 immediately.

Non-coastal parts of Prince William County are also under a Flood Watch, according to the National Weather Service. They said isolated areas may experience up to four inches of rain, and creeks and streams in the area could steadily rise. Flooding in urban areas is also possible.
