WOODBRIDGE, VA — A man shot a dog in Woodbridge on Sunday night after the animal bit him, police said. The man received medical treatment at the scene. The dog was later euthanized at an area animal hospital.

The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. on Sunday at a home in the 3400 block of Flint Tavern Place. Officers responded to the home when they learned of gun shots in the area.

The victim, who police described as a 40-year-old man, was visiting a family member's home on Flint Tavern Place. During the visit, the family member's dog bit him, police said.

The victim fell to the ground as the dog continued to bite him, according to the police report. The man drew his gun and fired a single round which hit the dog.

The victim said he ran into the street, and the dog followed him. He fired more rounds, hitting the dog a second time, police said.

The dog then ran into the home before police arrived on the scene. The victim received treatment at the scene from emergency personnel, according to authorities.

The dog was taken to an animal hospital. There, staff euthanized the dug as a result of injuries it suffered in the shooting.

No other property damage or injuries were reported during the incident.
