Fire Marshal: Possession of Illegal Fireworks Is Class 1 Misdemeanor

Watch out for those illegal fireworks.

As you head into July 4 preparations, the Prince William County Fire Marshal’s office is reminding folks that illegal are prohibited in Prince William County and can be punishable by jail time.

If illegal fireworks are purchased online or out-of-state, the possession of such illegal fireworks could yield punishment of a Class 1 misdemeanor: fines up to $2,500 or up to one year in jail.

The Fire Marshal’s office recommends buying fireworks from local firework stands in Prince William County.

“These fireworks have been tested and approved by our office. However, no firework is safe and the best way to protect your loved-ones from fireworks-related injuries or worse is to not use fireworks and enjoy fireworks displays provided by professional organizations,” said the Fire Marshal’s office.
