Homelessness Center, Fire Station Construction Contracts Approved By PW County Board

Prince William County supervisors approved construction contracts for upcoming projects to build a new homelessness center and fire station.

WOODBRIDGE, VA — The Prince William Board of Supervisors took actions to advance a new fire station and homelessness services location in the eastern parts of the county.

On Tuesday, the board awarded a $21.5 million contact to Coakley & Williams Construction, LLC, to build the Homeless Navigation Center at 14716 Potomac Mills Road in Woodbridge. The board appropriated $2 million in U.S. Housing and Urban Development funding and $4 million in debt financing for the new facility, which will provide emergency shelter and other services to homeless adults.

The 34,000-square-foot facility will serve up to 50 adults. A drop-in center to provide homelessness services will also be on site, replacing the Bill Mehr Drop-In Center that will be demolished for the project.

According to the county, the new Homeless Navigation Center could be completed in fall 2027.

In a separate action, the board approved $3 million in debt financing and awarded a $16.2 million contract to Doyle Construction Company to build Fire and Rescue Station 27 15825 Spriggs Road between the Montclair and the Independent Hill communities. It will join 22 other fire and rescue stations, some of which are partly supported by volunteer fire departments.

According to the county, the new fire station will have 24-hour career fire and rescue staff for a pumper fire truck and advanced life support ambulance. The facility will provide sleeping quarters, a kitchen and dayroom, a physical fitness room, a training room, offices, three apparatus bays and an area for personal protective equipment.

The county expects completion of the new fire station in summer 2027.

"Building a new fire and rescue station strengthens our ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies, while the Homeless Navigation Center will expand access to shelter and coordinated services for some of our most vulnerable residents," said County Executive Chris Shorter in a statement. "Together, these projects support public safety, stability and a stronger community for everyone."
