WOODBRIDGE, VA—The gun used in apparent accidental discharge in a classroom Tuesday, April 30, in Hylton High at 14051 Spriggs Road has been found, Prince William County Police announced around 5:15 p.m., and students have been released. The 16-year-old student involved who apparently brought the gun to school and was showing it to others has been detained. He's charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

No injuries were reported other than the student who brought the gun, and he was treated at the scene for minor injuries. School will resume Wednesday as normal, albeit with an extra police presence.

Shortly before noon, a noise was heard inside an art classroom, and initial confusion ensued. The teacher immediately notified school security, and the student identified as the person who made the unidentified noise was removed from the classroom and taken to the main office. He wasn't initially cooperative when asked what had just happened, and neither were other students who saw the incident.

School staff members discovered a trash receptacle had damage consistent with a bullet striking it, and bullet fragments were then discovered in the ceiling where the shot is believed to have ricocheted. Once a shooting was confirmed, the school was placed on lockdown while police conducted a methodical search. Around 5 p.m., the gun was found hidden in an adjacent room to where the gun was discharged.

PWC Police chief Barry Barnard had said at a 4:30 p.m. news briefing (below) that the gun had not yet been located and the school remained on lockdown "out of an abundance of caution."
