Road Closure Planned For I-95 Interchange Project In Woodbridge
A road will be closed for the entire weekend for work related to an Interstate 95 interchange project, according to VDOT.

WOODBRIDGE, VA — The work to improve the Interstate 95 and Route 123 interchange in Woodbridge will prompt a road closure for an entire weekend, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Occoquan Road will be closed to through traffic between Horner Road and Old Bridge Road from 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18. VDOT says the closure is due to storm drainage installation for the I-95 and Route 123 interchange improvements project.
People needing to access properties along the closed part of Occoquan Road will be allowed to do so, but they cannot go beyond the overpass in both directions. Through traffic will be detoured via Horner Road, Route 123/Gordon Boulevard and Old Bridge Road back to Occoquan Road.

Aside from the weekend closure, VDOT previously announced long-term lane closures on Occoquan Road for the project. From late June 2025 to late 2026, Occoquan Road is reduced from two lanes to one in each direction between Hylton Avenue and Devils Reach Road. Pedestrians on Occoquan Road should be aware of sidewalk closures around the I-95 overpass and follow detour signs.
The interchange project is addressing an area of I-95 where frequent bottlenecks occur during peak travel times. Work includes replacing the northbound Route 123 loop ramp to southbound I-95 with a signalized left-turn to the southbound Route 123 ramp to southbound I-95 and widen the southbound Route 123 ramp to southbound I-95 from one to two lanes.

Other changes include moving the Route 123 and I-95 Express Lanes ramp intersection slightly south, realigning the southbound I-95 ramp to northbound Route 123, adding a shared-use path along northbound Route 123 from Annapolis Way to Devil's Reach Road, and widening and replacing the beams and deck of the southbound I-95 bridge over Occoquan Road.
Construction on southbound I-95, including the bridge over Occoquan Road, is expected to be complete in late 2027, while the entire interchange project could be complete in late 2028. VDOT plans to schedule a "pardon our dust" construction meeting in September.
