WOODBRIDGE, VA — Drivers will encounter a road closure for about two weeks near an Interstate 95 interchange in Woodbridge.

Starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, Occoquan Road will be closed to through traffic between Horner Road (Route 639) and Old Bridge Road (Route 641). The closure will last about two weeks. The Virginia Department of Transportation says the closure is for road work to lower Occoquan Road and maintain future bridge clearance for the I-95 and Route 123 interchange improvements project.

Residents needing to access properties along Occoquan Road will be allowed, but they cannot go beyond the overpass in either direction. Through traffic will be detoured via Horner Road, Route 123 (Gordon Boulevard), and Old Bridge Road back to Occoquan Road.

Occoquan Road is expected to reopen at the I-95 overpass by 5 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 24.

In addition to the two-week closure, Occoquan Road has lane closures between Hylton Avenue (Route 1209) and Devils Reach Road (Route 748) through late 2026. The road is reduced from two lanes to one lane in each direction for the interchange project's utility relocation, storm drainage installation, and the southbound I-95 overpass widening.

The I-95 and Route 123 interchange improvements project is addressing an area of I-95 where frequent bottlenecks occur during peak travel times. Work includes replacing the northbound Route 123 loop ramp to southbound I-95 with a signalized left-turn to the southbound Route 123 ramp to southbound I-95 and widening the southbound Route 123 ramp to southbound I-95 from one to two lanes.

Other changes include moving the Route 123 and I-95 Express Lanes ramp intersection slightly south, realigning the southbound I-95 ramp to northbound Route 123, adding a shared-use path along northbound Route 123 from Annapolis Way to Devil's Reach Road, and widening and replacing the beams and deck of the southbound I-95 bridge over Occoquan Road.

Project completion on southbound I-95, including the bridge over Occoquan Road, is expected in late 2027. The entire interchange project will be done by late 2028, VDOT says.
