VA Safety Patrol Member Killed Helping Driver On I-95: Police

A Safety Service Patroller from Falls Church was identified as the victim of the fatal crash on Interstate 95.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — A Safety Service Patrol member was killed in a crash while assisting a vehicle Saturday night on northbound Interstate 95 in Prince William County, police said.

The patroller, contracted by the state transportation department, was helping an disabled Audi on the right shoulder and lane when a Chrysler 300 moving in an out-of-control manner crossed all lanes and hit the patrol member and the Audi driver around 7:58 p.m. Saturday at mile marker 151 in the area of Dumfries, according to police.

The patroller was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries, police said. He was identified as Michael C. Freeland, 48, of Falls Church.

The Audi driver suffered injuries that were serious but not life-threatening, according to police.

Charges are pending consultation with the Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, police said. The crash is being investigated by state police.
