VDOT Now Timing Traffic Lights Near Shopping Centers

From now until New Year's Day, VDOT is recalibrating traffic signals to help alleviate holiday traffic around shopping centers.

To prevent traffic from building up around shopping centers in Northern Virginia, the Virginia Department of Transportation is timing local traffic signals from now until New Year’s Day.

VDOT has created traffic plans for 208 intersections using traffic data collected during last year’s holiday season, according to a press release.

“The goal is to accommodate the changing traffic patterns expected around the shopping centers as efficiently as possible,” said Ling Li, Operations Engineering Manager at VDOT’s Transportation Operations Center.

Holiday signal timing will be in effect from today, Thursday, Nov. 27, through Jan. 1, 2015 at the following shopping centers:

  • Cascades Town Center
  • Dulles 28 Centre
  • Dulles Town Center
  • Fair Lakes Shopping Center
  • Fair Oaks Mall
  • Leesburg Outlets
  • Manassas Mall
  • Potomac Mills Mall
  • Potomac Run Center
  • Reston Town Center
  • Springfield Town Center

VDOT says it will also monitor traffic conditions around the Virginia Gateway Shopping Center in Gainesville and make timing adjustments if needed, though it has no specific plans due to ongoing construction on U.S. 29.
