A Walk into History at Villa Madera

Haven’t you always been curious as to what lies behind the trimmed hedges of those wonderfulestate homes on Gravelly Lake Drive? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to admire the views of the lake and the gorgeous landscaping first hand! On July 31st, you’ll have the opportunity.

The Lakewood Historical Society is hosting a major fund raising event at Villa Madera, one of the most prestigious homes in Lakewood. It is a spacious Spanish Colonial Revival mansion originally known as Villa Carman that was built in 1919 by Joseph Carman, a Tacoma businessman. The L.T. Murray’s purchased it in 1939 and renamed it Madera. The property was subdivided into spacious lots in 1978 and became known as the gated community “Madera”. The current owners, Kyle and Gayle Hampton Smith purchased Villa Madera from Linda Evans in 2002.

During the summer afternoon on Sunday, July 31st from 2-6 pm, you can sip a glass of wine, nibble on delicious hors d'oeuvres, view the lush gardens and listen to live music. The theme will be the 1920’s and we encourage guests to wear vintage clothing. A classic automobile from LeMay Enterprises will be available for photo opportunities. The highlight of the event is a personally guided tour of the home.

Tickets are only $50 each and are available by visiting the Lakewood History Museum, 6211 Mt Tacoma Dr SW, Wed -Sat, 12-4 pm or calling 253-682-3480. Orders can be placed on from the Society’s website, www.lakewoodhistorical.org after July 5th. Payment may be made with personal checks to “Lakewood Historical Society” and mailing to PO Box 98014, Lakewood, WA 98496 or by sending your Visa/MasterCard information on the order form.
