Lakewood-JBLM, WA — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Shaina Okert who nominated Lexi, a fifth grader of Lakewood-JBLM, WA. According to her mother, Lexi is doing amazing in school, participates in sports like basketball and running and even built her own robot that focuses on human emotion.

How do you know the star local student?

My child

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Lexi is amazing all around, she carries herself well. Lexi is in basketball, running and Native American tribal dance, and will be going on the canoe journey this summer with the Cowlitz Tribe, through all of Lexi’s many activities Lexi is doing amazing at school.

Lexi just entered the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair with her project being a social and emotional robot that she has been expanding the engineering design process on. Last year Lexi created a robot that when you are frustrated and need to let it out you could scream at the robot and it would serve as a distraction to calm you down. This year she expanded the idea and created a social and emotional robot that has a color coding system that matches an emotion you feel. When you choose that color it provides you with strategies on how to help your mental health and feel better with advice such as closing your eyes and breathing, picking up an item and describing what it feels like and other strategies to help calm your emotions. Lexi received a second-place ribbon and won the Bonneville Power Administration award at the science fair for her project. Lexi will continue to build upon her robot, as she believes in finding strategies to help people get through everyday life, especially students such as herself.

Lexi knows firsthand about problems such as anxiety. Lexi would like to develop better strategies to help with anxiety, anger, depression, or just someone having a bad day without using medication and reminding people to use their tools in the moment. As Lexi’s parent, I am very proud of her thoughtfulness toward others and her ability to put her mind to good use. Lexi goes to Chief Leschi School and her science teacher is very encouraging and her school is very proud of her accomplishments.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Lexi thinks not only about herself but how things affect others around her.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Lexi!
