LAKEWOOD, WA — Lakewood's city manager advised drivers to prepare for a day-long closure scheduled for this Friday as road crews work to finish up improvements along Gravelly Lake Drive.

The closure, which is weather-dependent, will allow crews to complete permanent striping work along less than one mile of Gravelly Lake Drive, between Mt. Tacoma Drive and Steilacoom Boulevard. The project and closure is set for May 24 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In addition to the permanent striping, crews also recently completed traffic signal modifications at the intersections of both Bridgeport Way and Gravelly Lake Drive as well as Steilacoom Boulevard and Gravelly Lake Drive. The intersection modifications will permanently alter the lane configurations for these intersections going forward.

According to the city manager, the following changes should be recognized:

  • Motorists continuing northeast on Gravelly at Bridgeport are required to be in the right lane.
    • Previously, two lanes were permitted to continue northeast. The northbound approach now has two dedicated left turn lanes for northeast bound Gravelly to northbound Bridgeport Way.
  • At Steilacoom, those vehicles proceeding north into Lochburn from Gravelly will need to be in the right lane.
    • Previously, the northbound approach to the intersection had a thru/left lane and a dedicated right turn lane. Due to lane shifts for bike lanes, there are now a thru/right lane and a dedicated left turn lane.

The Gravelly Lake Drive improvement project began in early November 2018.
