Unique choices at Farmers Market

From massages to dog treats to cupcakes, Lakewood residents and visitors can find diversity at the weekly summer farmers market.

Kristi Roy, L.M.P., works down the street from City Hall. She decided to bring her business to the sunshine.

"It's a nice local spot to network," Roy said. "I know a lot of the people who come."

Another unique vendor is Carol Bartos, owner of Nala's Barkery, making fresh homemade treats for dogs. She named her business after her German shepherd, who died of kidney disease.

"I believed the disease was caused by her dog food," Bartos said. "So I started cooking for her. It kept her alive for a couple more years."

Bartos has continued to cook dog treats and sells to local farmers markets. She also sells hand-painted leash holders. Unfortunately for people, the treats look deceiving.

"I need to make a sign that says 'Not for human consumption,'" she said with a laugh.

Customers can also get free blood pressure screenings from St. Clare Hospital, the traditional fresh fruits and vegetables, cupcakes (chocolate ones are most popular) and pasta. The market will take place every Tuesday at Lakewood City Hall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Sept. 17.
