DeCoursey Park Sign Contest Winners

Puyallup student artists created awareness posters to discourage duck feeding at DeCoursey Park. See the winning designs on display soon!

Did you know that you shouldn’t feed ducks in the park?

Many don’t associate feeding bits of bread or other snacks to birds with issues in the environment, but it can be devastating to local habitat.

A special cleanup event at DeCoursey Park this past March also featured an educational art display on protecting the local habitat, created by Puyallup senior and junior high school students.

The event was sponsored by Friends of DeCoursey Park Committee (FDP), formed in cooperation with WSU Puyallup Research & Extension Center and the City of Puyallup Parks and Recreation Dept. to protect and improve the Clarks Creek & DeCoursey Pond water quality and ecosystem.

The committee launched the student DeCoursey Park Sign Contest to spread awareness about pond and creek water contamination. It is believed that people feed food scraps to the ducks and geese which causes over-crowding of waterfowl in the pond and ultimately leads to fecal contamination of the water.

The contest was an opportunity for Puyallup Junior and Senior high school students to design a fun sign and slogan discouraging people from feeding the ducks.
