The community is invited to join students and staff in celebrating Karshner Elementary Schoolβs 60th anniversary during a schoolwide assembly and cake reception on Friday, June 7.
The anniversary celebration begins at 2 p.m. with a school assembly in the gym, followed by a cake reception in the school library.
The event will include a slideshow of information and photos highlighting the past 60 years, as well as guest speakers and a student performance. School classrooms will also be open during the event.
Alumni or other community members who have photos or other school memorabilia they would like to share are asked to drop off the items at the school office by Friday, May 17. The school is located at 1328 8th Ave. N.W. in Puyallup.
In preparation for the event, school volunteers are repainting the portable classrooms on site, installing a bench on the side of the building near the parking lot, and planting flowers and a tree, said Principal Arturo Gonzalez.
Karshner Elementary opened in 1953, had a classroom addition in 1962, and had a schoolwide modernization in 1989.
The school is named after the late Warner Karshner, a well-known doctor in Puyallup who taught for several years at Spinning Elementary and served 12 years in the state Legislature.
Karshner also traveled extensively throughout the world and brought artifacts back to Puyallup, many of which have been displayed at the Karshner Museum.
