Puyallup Announces Downtown Streetscape Open House

The city is asking the public to weigh in on several proposals to renovate the Meridian corridor.

PUYALLUP, WA β€” The City of Puyallup will be hosting a virtual open house later this month to discuss its Meridian Streetscapes Project. During the open house, the public will be asked to weigh in and help shape the "character, aesthetic, and functionality" of the Meridian corridor and nearby downtown streets.

β€œThis is really looking at Meridian, and downtown as a whole, and asking what public infrastructure improvements we can prioritize that will make the most impact for our pedestrians,” said Project Manager Scott Tkach. β€œThings like adding new public benches, replacing garbage receptacles, and making our sidewalks more approachable to people.”

The city says that, ultimately, the goal is to revitalize the Meridian corridor for those who live there, and the project will include changes to public sidewalks, street trees, plants, vegetation, public art, curb extensions, street benches, and traffic-calming installations.

β€œThis project goes beyond the functional elements of a walkable downtown,” said Meredith Neal, Economic Development Director for the City of Puyallup. We’re also looking at aesthetics that add to the charm and character of downtown Puyallup and build on Puyallup’s arts and cultural assets. For example, public art, flower baskets, street trees, attractive signage, and other elements that make downtown a destination to shop, eat, work, and play.”

To help the public understand the proposed changes and give residents an opportunity to express their comments or concerns, the city will be hosting a virtual open house over Zoom on Wednesday, Jan. 26. The open hopuse will include one session at nopon, and another at 6 p.m. Both will allow the public to weigh in directly with city leaders.
