Puyallup city councilman Steve Vermillion, "one of the best pilots in Vietnam," was recently inducted into the DUSTOFF Hall of Fame, an honor to those those who volunteered to fly unarmed medical helicopters during the Vietnam War.

All military pilots andΒ soldiers face life-and-death situations every day with bravery, but perhaps thoseΒ who require the most courage are theΒ ones who recover the wounded.

During the Vietnam War, 2,800 pilots, crew chief and medics volunteeredΒ to joinΒ DUSTOFF andΒ fly unarmed medical helicopters into battle zonesΒ to rescue wounded soldiers and civilians.

In all, DUSTOFF crews experienced greater than 33 percentΒ casualties and a greater loss in airframes. But, through their willingness to fly on a 24/7 basis, day and night, in all weather conditions and against a formidable enemy force, they evacuated nearly 1 million wounded from the battle field.Β
