Puyallup Police Reports: Disturbed Man Attempts to Steal Helicopter from Good Samaritan, Man Wielding Baton Arrested Outside Walmart

The following arrest and crime information from Feb. 13, 2013 to Feb. 20, 2013 has been supplied by the Puyallup Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

FEB. 13, 2013

Involuntary Commit: A man climbed the rear public access stairway of the Good Samaritan Emergency rooftop landing zone and picked up an emergency telephone, saying β€œGod sent me to get a helicopter.” When hospital staff refused to give him rooftop access, he scaled the stairway railing, breaching security and went up to the rooftop. He did not find a helicopter there and reentered the building. He was clearly off his medication and was involuntarily committed for mental observation. Good Samaritan has changed their rooftop access protocol and will be fortifying the gate after the incident, police noted.

Obstructing: An officer attempted to stop a vehicle on Fruitland and 31st for expired tabs, but the driver failed to yield and led the officer into a dead end. He lives in that neighborhood and said it β€œwasn’t a convenient time” to get stopped by police. He was very verbal and uncooperative, and booked for failing to yield and obstructing an officer.

Shoplifting: A woman who admitted she β€œjust loves to shoplift” was arrested for attempting to steal over $100 in items from Walmart.

DUI: A driver was stopped for driving over 50 mph on E. Main and nearly striking the center island of the Shaw Road overpass. He was arrested for DUI.

Unlawful Imprisonment, Assault: A man fled his father’s trailer after he assaulted him and refused to let him leave the trailer until he was able to get away. He was later tracked down by K-9 units outside his mother’s home on River Road.

Felony Weapon Possession: After an exchange of words outside Walmart, a man pulled out a BB handgun and held it to his side. He was detained and a real rifle was found in the car. The man said the car was not his. He is a convicted felon and claimed both guns weren’t real.

MIP, Obstructing: Witnesses called in a juvenile fight at Bradley Lake Park inside the playground toys. Several juveniles tried to run from the officers unsuccessfully in the shrubbery outside Walmart. Three teens were trespassed from the park.

Suspicious Person: A resident on 2nd Ave. NE heard the back door handle of his residence being tried, and went out and saw no one. Later, he found papers in the alley from a nearby jail with an inmate’s information on them.

Theft: Two rifles and a handgun were stolen from a residence on 2nd St. SE.

FEB. 15, 2013

Assault: A man was inside Walmart when he saw an old acquaintance he didn’t like and confronted him with his expandable metal baton. He also pulled back the baton and walked toward a Walmart employee at the gun counter and threatened him as well. Other employees demanded he leave but police were called. He was intoxicated and still had the baton in his hand when officers arrived and squared off with officers. He was kicked into the bushes after punching an officer. The suspect sustained a broken rib during the fight; he was booked into Pierce County Jail.

Meth Possession: A driver was stopped for a defective headlight on 2nd St NE. He admitted to using heroin and prescription meds before driving. He had a felony warrant out for his arrest and methamphetamine was found on his person.

DUI: A tow truck driver reported that he had passed a vehicle on the 1100 block of River Road and the driver was passed out behind the wheel. The car was in gear and his cell phone was in his hand. The car was in the lane of travel and idling in the tow lot. The driver was very impaired and admitted to drinking at the Loose Wheel prior to driving.

Interrupted Burglary, Assault: A homeowner on 19th Ave. SE walked into his home to find a white male in his 20s in his bedroom. The suspect punched the victim in the face about 5 times before fleeing on foot. A laptop and some jewelry were missing. A K-9 unit was sent out after the suspect’s shoe was found in the home, but the suspect could not be located. Neighbors said the suspect went several doors down the block and knocked on doors asking for a ride, but was denied.

Vehicle vs Stroller Accident: A vehicle was leaving the parking lot of a business on 39th Ave. The driver did not see a woman pushing her toddler in a stroller behind and started to pull out, striking both. The stroller was bent up and started to be rolled up by the truck, which fortunately stopped in time. The child was not injured but his mother was visibly shaken. The driver was not intoxicated and distraught about what happened.

FEB. 17, 2013

Residential Burglary: A resident on 36th St. Pl. SE was out of state and discovered someone broke through their rear window while they were gone. A pillowcase full of jewelry and collectible coins was stacked near the door but not taken; it appeared the suspect’s attempt to get away with the loot was unsuccessful.

DUI: Officers were called to a possible fight where a victim was being loaded into a vehicle. The driver said he had been drinking at a party, the results of the assault investigation were unfounded. He was arrested for DUI.

Theft of Services: Two people took a cab from the Muckleshoot Casino to their Puyallup apartment, but they didn’t have money for the $40 ride. They both fled and were both located a short distance away, both were booked in jail.

Vandalism: Unknown people placed a β€œchemical cleaner bomb” on the front porch of a home on 35th St. Pl. SE. A 2-liter Coke bottle went off and blew away from the house. There were no injuries.

Arson: Someone set a W. Pioneer detached garage on fire.

Car Theft: A car was stolen from outside Target. The suspect has a β€œvery obvious” tattoo on the top of his head, which is shaved.

FEB. 19, 2013

Theft: Serta Mattresses reported that 81 mattress had been stolen from a store trailer. Several trips were made quickly in the theft, because the trailer was only left unattended for a short time.

Mental Health: A woman was taken into protective custody after she was found tearing apart a mobile home in the River View RV Park.

Trespassing: A man was arrested for trespassing after he was found camping behind Safeway.

Residential Burglary: Three individuals were arrested near the cemetery after they were found with stolen jewelry inside the car. They were suspected in burglaries on 13th St. SW. and on 33rd Ave. Ct. SW.

Transient Camp: A transient camp was found near the 300 block of N. Meridian.

FEB. 20, 2013

Residential Burglary: A home on 12th Ave. SE was burglarized; it appeared entry was made through the cat door.
