2018 Renton Baseball Classic was a Thriller
The first annual match-up at Liberty Park between cross-town rivals Renton High & Lindbergh High last Friday evening launched a new event
The 2018 Renton Baseball Classic featured a doubleheader between the schools junior varsity teams in the first game and the nightcap showcased the varsity teams. And with the Renton Lions Club barbecuing hot dogs and providing chips and soda, fans and players had a total baseball and food experience rivaling an electrifying Seattle Mariners game.
The two games were as exciting as baseball can get. The JV game was a run-scoring explosion with Renton winning 14-8. Renton jumped out to an early lead 6-2 lead after three innings, but Lindbergh scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning narrowing Renton’s lead to 6-5 before Renton pulled away.
The second game, featuring the varsity teams, was played under the bright lights of Liberty Park. Unlike the first game, this was a pitchers dual. It was a nail-biter until the last inning. Tied at 2-2, Lindbergh’s Logan King drove in the go ahead run in top of 7th and last inning for a Lindbergh 3-2 victory. King was also the winning pitcher. Renton’s Elijah Olson pitched the full game and struck out 9 batters in the loss.
Chris Fedor, Renton's varsity head coach, said the first-ever Renton Baseball Classic had been a fun day of baseball. He commended grounds crew at Liberty Park who worked their tails off to get the field playable after prior days of rain. “They did a great job for us!” He also cited Diane Dobson, Renton Booster Club board member and other Renton Lions Club volunteers for being “rock stars” in making the first Renton Baseball Classic a special treat for fans and players.
