The City of Renton recognized the local refugee population earlier this week, and declared June 20, 2011 "World Refugee Day."
More than 43 million people in the world, including 17 million refugees, have fled their homes as a result of war, persecution, or natural disaster, according to the City's proclamation.
The City has created forums to better connect with Renton's diverse popultion and is currently working with the Renton Library, Lutheran Community Service Northwest and other agences to provide refugees in the area with support and services.
