Hazelwood Elementary School Teacher Honored as ‘Symetra Hero in the Classroom’

"Second-grade teacher Tracy Dyson has had a hugely positive impact on my daughter's life," says Hazelwood parent Amy Donaldson.

Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks honored Hazelwood Elementary School teacher Tracy Dyson as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” on Oct. 12 during a surprise school assembly. Dyson is a 2nd grade teacher at the K–5 school, located in Newcastle and part of the Renton School District.

“Tracy Dyson is an amazing teacher who takes the time with her students to address any problems they may have. She offers encouragement while gently communicating the importance of striving to be successful. Mrs. Dyson keeps her kids accountable, not just for their homework but also for their actions and how they treat others. This approach helps the children become better students and achieve their academic goals while also helping them learn how to become better people,” said Amy Donaldson, the parent of one of Dyson’s former students. “One of the things I most appreciated about Mrs. Dyson is how well she communicates with parents; she encourages them to come and volunteer in her classroom. It builds a bridge to a healthy, productive relationship between parents, teacher and student.” Donaldson nominated Dyson for the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom® award.

“Mrs. Dyson has had a huge impact on my daughter’s life. After struggling with reading and some difficulty focusing in 1st and 2nd grade, she is now a thriving 4th-grader,” said Donaldson. “Thanks to Mrs. Dyson’s dedication, suggestions and tips for how to help her read without getting frustrated with herself, my daughter has blossomed. She shines with the confidence that comes from knowing she can do it—and she has an unbreakable bond with Mrs. Dyson that’s a joy to behold!”

Dyson is one of 16 K–12 teachers across the Puget Sound area that will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2017 NFL season. Teachers are recognized in front of their students and peers at surprise in-school presentations, and they receive a $2,000 donation for classroom books and supplies. In addition, they receive tickets to a Seahawks home game and are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at CenturyLink Field. Dyson will be recognized at the Oct. 29 game when the Seahawks take on the Houston Texans.

Teachers may be nominated by their principal, district staff, student or student’s parent. The winners are selected based on their ability to make a real difference in students' lives; to go above and beyond in their day-to-day responsibilities; and to help students build life skills.
