Renton Cancels 120th Anniversary Weekend Celebration

"With cases of COVID-19 very high, our hospitals strained, and children back to school, we do not feel it is responsible," the city said.

RENTON, WA — Due to an increase in COVID-19 cases, Renton announced that the events scheduled to mark its 120th anniversary as an incorporated city have been canceled.

The events were scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18 and included the Renton Multicultural Festival, the Voice of Planet Multicultural Art Exhibit and the fireworks show at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park.

"With cases of COVID-19 very high, our hospitals strained, and children back to school, we do not feel it is responsible to host events that will attract large crowds. Like you, we are disappointed," city officials said in a statement posted to the city's website. "We will be working hard to reschedule and look forward to seeing you when we can safely celebrate together!"

The same day Renton city officials issued the cancellation, Washington Department of Health officials announced that hospital capacity across the state is currently stressed.

"DOH encourages Washingtonians to help by doing their part such as getting vaccinated, wearing masks in crowded or indoor public places, and taking other preventive steps," state health officials said.

Washington Secretary of Health Dr. Umair A. Shah said Thursday that in the last six weeks, there have been five outdoor events that became "super spreader" events in the state. More than 500 people were infected at concerts, fairs, and rodeos across Washington, he said.

Beginning Sept. 13, facial coverings will be required for large outdoor events with 500 or more attendees, Gov. Jay Inslee said.
