The man behind the Renton American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW) tribute to men and women lost at sea — Ted Taylor — was absent from this morning’s memorial at Liberty Park.
Darrell Pilat with the VFW remembered Tayor during the opening of the ceremony. A former member of both the American Legion and VFW, Taylor began the annual Renton Memorial Day tribute to fallen sailors more than 20 years ago. He passed away last September.
VFW Chaplain Bruce Feltmann gave the opening prayer and Rod Hanes of the American Legion shared some of his memories while at sea.

“I give thanks to all the men and women who go to sea,” he said. “It is a very trying experience.”
Following the memorial at Liberty Park members of the Renton American Legion Post 19 and VFW Post 1263 drove to Mount Olivet Cemetery for a memorial at 10 a.m., then Greenwood Memorial Park at 11 a.m., followed by a gathering at the Renton Veterans Memorial Park at 1 p.m.
