Spirit Of The Highlander Awards Go To Under-Recognized Students

Hazen teachers and staff recognized nearly 100 students during the Spirit of the Highlander Awards, held Friday, May 4 from 7:15 – 8:30 a.m. in the Hazen High School cafeteria. Now in its fourth year, these awards are presented to students who do great things every day, but may sometimes fly under the radar.  

Sixty-two staff members nominated the students who received their awards at the early morning ceremony, which was catered by the culinary arts students.

Each individual staff member uses their own discretion for who to nominate, based on the students “work,” which could mean exceptional academic achievement, behavioral improvement, academic improvement, exceptional tenacity, overcoming personal difficulties, helping out their classmates, making positive life choices, or anything else that staff might want to encourage in the student body.

Students from all grade levels were recognized.

Attendees, including staff, students, parents and siblings also enjoyed a live performance by Hazen’s Divina Voce under the direction of Josh Viles, and the Hazen Jazz Combo under the direction of Ernest Hibbard.
