📰 News we're reading

1. UPDATE: West Seattle's only overnight shelter reports that fundraising goals were met and exceeded (westsideseattle.com) — West Seattle’s only overnight cold‑weather shelter has now met and exceeded its urgent fundraising goal, allowing it to keep providing food and winter shelter for unhoused neighbors. The volunteer‑run Westside Neighbors Shelter still needs ongoing donations of money and warm clothing to stay sustainable while continuing morning services and safe overnight space during the coldest months.

2. Damaged ferry leads to one-boat service on Seattle, Bremerton route (king5.com) — If you rely on the Seattle–Bremerton ferry, expect delays: the route is down to a single boat after the aging Walla Walla’s propeller was found sheared off. Washington State Ferries says repairs and dry-docking will take a few weeks, leaving only the Chimacum to handle all sailings and significantly affecting many Puget Sound commuters.

3. Revelers pack Seattle light rail stations for NYE. Is the World Cup next? (fox13seattle.com) — New Year’s Eve crowds briefly jammed Seattle light rail stations just after midnight, but Sound Transit says platforms cleared within about 30 minutes. Officials are already gearing up for much larger World Cup crowds in 2026, promising more frequent trains, new line connections, and a dedicated task force to keep service moving smoothly around Seattle’s stadiums.

4. HazMat response clears state health office in Seattle (king5.com) — Seattle fire and police crews investigated a suspicious letter at a state Department of Social and Health Services office on East Cherry Street, prompting a hazmat response Friday afternoon. After monitoring the building, Seattle Fire determined it was safe to reenter, and officials say the response was precautionary, with no hazardous materials, odors, or devices ultimately found.

5. No. 7 Gonzaga survives scare, beats Seattle U 80-72 in OT (mynorthwest.com) — Seattle U’s men’s basketball team pushed No. 7 Gonzaga to overtime before falling 80-72 in their first matchup since 1980, a strong showing in the Redhawks’ standout season. Seattle led by as many as 13 in Spokane, with Brayden Maldonado scoring 17 as the program continues its promising first year in the West Coast Conference.
