📰 News we're reading

1. WSDOT announces Revive I-5 work begins this January in Seattle (fox13seattle.com) — Northbound I-5 through Seattle’s Ship Canal Bridge will face months of lane reductions and several full weekend closures starting January 9, 2026, as WSDOT resumes Revive I-5 work. Drivers should expect major delays, watch for changing signage, and use express lanes and alternate routes while crews repair and resurface the bridge deck through late 2026, with southbound work planned in 2027.

2. BIZNOTE FOLLOWUP: Lucky Sushi not rolling into North Delridge space after all (westseattleblog.com) — If you were waiting for Lucky Sushi to open in North Delridge, that plan has been scrapped because the space couldn’t be licensed for their needs. The Columbia City owners are still hunting for another West Seattle location, while the Delridge Way space is now being marketed for office use instead of a restaurant.

3. King County overdose deaths fall in 2025 but remain higher than pre-pandemic levels (thecentersquare.com) — King County saw overdose deaths drop to 908 in 2025, the lowest since 2021 but still far above pre-pandemic levels. Public Health – Seattle & King County credits expanded services, including a telehealth prescribing hotline, mobile outreach, naloxone distribution, and added staffing at the Pathways Clinic in downtown Seattle, all funded by the voter-approved Crisis Care Centers Levy.

4. Naked gardeners, backyard fighters, and butterflies: KUOW's good news in 2025 (kuow.org) — Seattle readers get a roundup of 2025’s feel-good local stories, from a city program helping restaurateur Donna Moodie reopen Marjorie to PCC’s downtown return and a new dog café in Queen Anne. You’ll also find quirky regional highlights like naked gardening, tidepooling, and efforts to save butterflies and orcas that connect directly back to Seattle communities.

5. Man dies at King County Jail (seattletimes.com) — A 48-year-old man died early Tuesday while in custody at the King County Jail in downtown Seattle after officers found him unresponsive in his bunk. The medical examiner will determine his cause of death, and Public Health – Seattle & King County will join the jail in an internal review, with a public report required within 120 days.
