• Downtown Spokane Partnership announces launch of new community art competition (krem.com) — Downtown Spokane residents can look forward to a new monthly “First Friday Face-Off” live art competition kicking off in early January at The Parkade, tied to the long-running First Friday Art Walk. Local artists will paint live during two-hour challenges, with winners chosen by public vote and advancing toward a year-end Brushes & Boughs championship event featuring the First Friday Artist of the Year.
   

• This day in history: Coors beer makes Spokane debut; Attempted recall Spokane public safety commissioner enters petition phase (spokesman.com) — Spokane history buffs get a two-for-one look back at December 26, with a 1975 milestone when Coors finally opened a distribution plant here and a 1925 push to recall the city’s public safety commissioner over liquor, gambling, and vice.
