Spokane Valley crash leads to arrest of armed suspect after fight with witnesses (khq.com) — An early New Year’s Day crash in Spokane Valley led to the arrest of a driver accused of being impaired with his young son in the car. Deputies say witnesses stopped him from leaving, disarmed him after he allegedly pulled a knife, and he now faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges in Spokane County.
   

2. Spokane Valley mobile home park fire displaces multiple families (spokesman.com) — A shed fire at the Kings Court mobile home park in Spokane Valley spread to three homes this week, displacing multiple families but causing no serious injuries. Fire crews arrived in under six minutes, rescued two animals, and believe a propane space heater likely sparked the blaze. The Red Cross is helping affected residents, and officials urge careful use of space heaters near flammable items.
   

3. Spokane family loses $1,900 to sophisticated phone spoofing scam targeting jail families (kxly.com) — A Spokane couple is warning others after losing $1,900 to scammers who spoofed Spokane County Jail and sheriff’s office phone numbers and demanded fake bail and monitoring fees. Local officials stress they never call to request money and urge residents to hang up, verify numbers independently, and only pay bail in person.

Hundreds plunge into Lake CdA for annual New Year's Day tradition (spokesman.com) — A Spokane resident was among the hardy crowd plunging into Lake Coeur d’Alene’s icy waters for the New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge. He compared the frigid lake to a recent dip in the Spokane River and described the tradition as a mental challenge and energizing way for Inland Northwest neighbors to start the year together.
   

5. Project Joy brings music, nostalgia to senior communities (spokanejournal.com) — A long-running Spokane nonprofit called Project Joy is bringing live music, nostalgia, and connection to seniors in care facilities across the Spokane area, powered by more than 200 volunteer performers over age 50. Based at Southside Community Center and partly funded by City of Spokane Parks & Recreation, the group offers frequent concerts and invites new local entertainers to audition.
