Here’s what’s happening in February! You can experience science and stories for kids and families. Everyone is invited to see our Mini & Virtual Art Show in libraries and online. Trivia is for everyone as we explore animated movie villains and who is the most evil of all. Adults can learn new skills, including how to knit with lace and plan their estate. Historian Matthew Avery Sutton shares the extraordinary story of missionaries, priests, and rabbis who played an outsized role in leading the U.S. and allies to victory in World War II. Gardeners, both aspiring and seasoned, will find lots of programs and tips to get ideas sprouting for a green spring. The SCORE business workshop takes a look at the important topic of Understanding Your Financial Statements. Storytime Shorts Storytime is a great way to help young children learn language and literacy skills that help them get ready for kindergarten. Taller de Equilibrio / Science for Kids in Spanish: Balance Workshop Explore el concepto de equilibrio como un científico: ¡un científico que habla español! Nos reuniremos en línea a través de Zoom y un bibliotecario nos guiará para realizar experimentos científicos. El bibliotecario utilizará materiales del curso “Leap into Science” del Instituto Franklin. Los materiales del curso están completamente en español. Los niños ampliarán su vocabulario en español mediante la práctica de términos científicos. La biblioteca proporcionará el material para realizar los experimentos. Este programa es para niños de K–3 grados y sus familias. Explore balance like a scientist—a scientist who speaks Spanish! During the online Zoom meeting, a librarian guides you through science experiments. The librarian uses “Leap into Science” course materials from the Franklin Institute. The course materials are entirely in Spanish. Kids will expand their Spanish vocabulary by practicing scientific terms that aren’t used in everyday conversation. At least one person in your family needs to be familiar with spoken Spanish to be able to follow along with the program. The library will provide supplies to conduct the experiments. Families can pick up their supplies in the library or using curbside pickup after they have received a notification email. Saturday, Feb 26, 4–5pm | REGISTER Adults Creativebug: Intro to Lace Knitting Cozy up and knit yourself a lacy shawl. Participants will watch online class videos on their own time, and then meet up online to share tips and encouragement. This challenge is perfect for knitters who are comfortable with the basics of casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off and are ready to take their craft to the next level. We’ll touch on the topics of wills versus revocable living trusts, power of attorney forms in Washington state, health care directives (a.k.a. living wills), and the importance of proper beneficiary designations for non-probate assets such as life insurance and retirement plans. If time allows, there will be a question-and-answer session at the end of the presentation. Adults This presentation is given by Diane J. These religious men and women carried out covert operations, bombings, and assassinations—confident that their nefarious deeds would eventually help them achieve their mission by expanding the kingdom of God. Historian Matthew Avery Sutton shares the extraordinary story of these missionaries, priests, and rabbis who played an outsized role in leading the United States to victory in World War II. This talk is an untold story of wartime spy craft and a profound account of the compromises and doubts that war forces on those who wage it. Adults Matthew Avery Sutton (he/him) is the Berry Family Distinguished Professor in Liberal Arts and the chair of the Department of History at Washington State University. He has authored several books, the most recent of which is Double Crossed: The Missionaries Who Spied for the United States During the Second World War (2019). He has written for the New York Times and Washington Post. In 2016, he was appointed a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow. Sutton lives in Pullman, Washington.
