Washington Street damaged, closed in apparent water systems malfunction (spokesman.com) — A water system malfunction has buckled Washington Street near 8th Avenue, shutting down a key South Hill route and sending water and debris down the hill. Spokane Public Works crews are on scene assessing damage and cleanup, but officials don’t yet know what caused the failure or how long repairs and detours will last.

2. Two inmates die from overdoses at Spokane County Jail (khq.com) — Two inmates recently died and a third survived suspected drug overdoses at the Spokane County Jail, where Narcan has already been used 38 times this year. Local investigators and the medical examiner are working to determine what substances were involved and how they entered the facility. Spokane County officials say more information will be released as the investigation continues.

3. Man sentenced in Spokane for strangulation assault (khq.com) — A Spokane Superior Court judge has sentenced 41-year-old Michael Y. Feland to just over six years in prison for a strangulation assault on a woman in Spokane’s East Central neighborhood. The victim reported waking in a vehicle to find a cord around her neck and later sought help after losing consciousness. Feland also faces 18 months of community custody and a decade-long no-contact order.

4. Spokane swiftwater rescue teams on west side to receive state assistance (khq.com) — Spokane and Spokane Valley fire crews have deployed swiftwater rescue teams and are now receiving additional state support while helping with severe flooding in western Washington. Local firefighters are conducting rescues, assisting the National Guard, and may remain deployed for an unknown period, which could temporarily affect specialized water-rescue capacity back home.
