MILWAUKEE, WI — After a smoky start to the week and an air quality alert until noon Tuesday, a steady warmup across much of Wisconsin could bring temperatures up to almost 100 degrees by Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to be on the rise throughout the week with some chances of thunderstorms throughout, the NWS said in a statement to Twitter. It could be one of the hottest stretches of the year ahead, so forecasters are encouraging people to check on their older friends and neighbors and to make sure their air conditioning works.

Heat index values could reach the middle 90s by Wednesday, then as high as 97 degrees, with a heat index around 100 degrees, Thursday, the NWS said.

"Heat index values in the middle 90s are currently forecast for Wednesday, then the upper 90s and lower 100s for Thursday," read the NWS forecast.

Beforehand, the entire state besides the far southwest is under an air quality advisory for particle matter. Forecasters said the smoke, coming from Canada, may reach the unhealthy for sensitive groups level, so people with heart or lung disease, older adults and children should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.
