📰 News we're reading

1. Tiny home village for veterans gets $204,000 boost from Green Bay Redevelopment Authority (wtaq.com) — A planned tiny home village for homeless veterans on Green Bay’s east side just secured an extra $204,000 from the city’s Redevelopment Authority, moving the project closer to reality. The nonprofit Veterans 1st is building 21 small homes and a community center on the former Brown County Mental Health Center site, aiming to open within two years and help veterans transition to independent living.

2. Green Bay public schools expect another $2 million gap due to lower special ed funding (fox11online.com) — Green Bay’s public schools are facing an unexpected additional $2 million budget gap this year after the state lowered its projected special education reimbursement rate. District leaders say they’ve already closed schools and cut staff and supplies, and now may need more hiring freezes and program cuts. State lawmakers are debating legislation to restore higher reimbursement levels using part of Wisconsin’s budget surplus.

3. Firefighters urge residents to clear snow from hydrants amid winter storm (fox11online.com) — Green Bay firefighters are asking residents to dig out nearby fire hydrants after Winter Storm Clara dumped more than a foot of snow, warning that frozen drifts can cost precious seconds in an emergency. With about 4,000 hydrants citywide, officials are urging families—especially kids joining the “Hydro Helpers” program—to keep three feet clear around hydrants to help protect their neighborhoods all winter.

4. Wisconsin DHS will continue to recommend hepatitis B vaccines for newborns (wbay.com) — Reporting from Green Bay, state health officials say Wisconsin will keep recommending hepatitis B vaccinations for newborns at birth, despite a recent change in CDC guidance. They cite over 30 years of safety data, a 99% drop in infant infections, and the risk of lifelong liver disease if babies are exposed early, and promise to keep reviewing new research.

5. Local leaders come together to support Somali Americans after racist viral video (wearegreenbay.com) — Green Bay community leaders gathered at City Hall to condemn a racist incident involving a Somali couple and to back a new resolution supporting Somali residents. The non-binding measure, introduced by Mayor Eric Genrich and an Equal Rights Commission member, has sparked debate ahead of a council vote Tuesday, with local Republicans criticizing the effort as symbolic rather than addressing crime, homelessness, and infrastructure.
