GREENDALE, WI — A special type of speed bump will be installed on Broad Street in October as Greendale officials look to improve pedestrian safety, the village announced.

The installation will detour drivers for about three weeks from Broad Street onto Parking Street, the village said. Construction is set to begin in October at the current site of the Broad Street crosswalk halfway between Northway and Schoolway, the village said.

People will still be able to access downtown business parking lots during the construction.

The new feature will be similar to a speed bump as both devices seek to calm traffic. With a speed table though, the entire wheelbase of the vehicle is raised, as opposed to a speed bump that raises one set of wheels at a time, according to the National Association of City Transportation Officials.

The speed table comes as a continued effort to improve pedestrian safety, the village said. All costs of the project will come from Community Development Block Grants.

The plan comes over a decade after 5-year-old Ava Marie Zimmerman was killed in Greendale by a car in a crosswalk.
