First-Time DUI Offenses Could Be Expunged: GOP Bill
If a first-time DUI offender meets a few conditions, the bill would mean they can petition for an expungement of the offense.
MADISON, WI — Wisconsin Republican lawmakers introduced a bill Monday easing punishment of some first-time offenders of driving under the influence. If the bill goes through, certain offenders could ask judges to erase their record.
The AP reported Sen. Andre Jacque and Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt proposed that first-time offenders who didn't cause an injury and whose blood alcohol content was less than .15 percent could petition for an expungement of the DUI from their record. The duo is looking for cosponsors of the bill.
The first-time DUI offense would still count in future convictions, and the offender would have to drive with an ignition interlock device, or wear an alcohol-monitoring device, for six months.
