MILWAUKEE, WI — A police officer was wounded and a man wanted for violating a domestic violence order apparently took their own life after exchanging gunfire with Milwaukee police near 11th Street and Keefe Avenue Friday, according to authorites.

The officer was wounded from a shot that was possibly accidental, Chief Jeffrey Norman told reporters during a news conference Friday. It all started when officers saw the man in the 1100 block of Keefe Avenue Friday just before noon, according to Norman.

When police spotted the man he ran and a chase continued on foot, Norman said. During that chase, the man shot at police and police shot back, according to Norman. Police said the suspect shot back again and fled into a yard in the 3500 block of 11th street, although police did not return fire the second time.

At that point, Norman said the suspect apparently shot and wounded himself. Officers approached the suspect and as they were stabilizing him, an officer was struck by a bullet that Norman said likely came inadvertently from the suspect's gun.

The officer suffered non-fatal injuries and was brought to the hospital, Norman said. The suspect, a 43-year-old man from Milwaukee, died from his wound, according to police.
