MILWAUKEE, WI — After a Milwaukee sheriff's deputy was dragged for 30 feet by a stolen vehicle on June 2 at the city's lakefront, a 21-year-old has been arrested, authorities announced Friday.

A license plate camera had detected the vehicle as stolen around 11 a.m. at the parking lot adjacent to Bradford Beach, the sheriff's office said. But when a deputy tried to stop the car, the driver reversed with his door open, hitting and dragging the deputy until he hit a pickup truck behind him, dislodging the deputy but allowing the driver to speed away, according to a sheriff's office news release.

The deputy made it out of the incident with just minor scrapes and bruises, authorities said.

The car was later found near 1500 East Providence Avenue, abandoned, police said. Evidence from the vehicle led officers to a home in the 2800 block of Center Street, where they arrested the 21-year-old on Wednesday, a news release said.

The sheriff's office said the driver could face charges including first-degree recklessly endangering safety and operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.

A 19-year-old had gotten out of the car before the driver fled and was arrested the day of the incident, authorities said. The sheriff's office recovered a handgun from him and he now faces charges in connection with a stolen car, police said.

Authorities did not immediately identify the driver past his age.
