Man Convicted Of Attempted Homicide After Detective Shot In Third Ward

A man pleaded guilty this week to multiple charges in connection with the early 2022 shooting of an off-duty detective in Milwaukee.

MILWAUKEE, WI — The man accused of shooting an off-duty Milwaukee police officer multiple times in early 2022 amid a robbery that went wrong has pleaded guilty to three charges, according to online court records.

Keasean J Ellis-Brown, 20, reached a deal with the state and on Wednesday pleaded guilty to felony charges including attempted first-degree intentional homicide, attempting to take and drive a vehicle without consent and driving a vehicle without consent, according to online court records.

The afternoon of the Jan. 13 shooting, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman told reporters three teens tried to rob a delivery driver in Milwaukee's Third Ward near Buffalo and Water Streets, leading 37-year-old detective Andrew Wilkiewicz to intervene before he was shot multiple times.

After the teens failed to steal a car from a DoorDash driver, one followed the driver into the Shake Shack lobby nearby, which is when Wilkiewicz intervened, according to a criminal complaint.

Video showed a struggle between Ellis-Brown and the detective before both pulled out handguns, the complaint said. The detective was struck multiple times as Ellis-Brown ran out of the store while shooting back inside, the complaint said.

Police said the detective shot back, but did not hit anyone.

Wilkiewicz was rushed to Froedtert Hospital in the immediate aftermath of the shooting and discharged by Jan. 18.

Months after the shooting, by March 2022, police said they arrested Ellis-Brown in Milwaukee.
