MILWAUKEE, WI — The Milwaukee Police Department on Friday released footage showing the chase and crash that led to an officer fatally shooting a suspect near 91st Street and Silver Spring Drive in February.

The department released the footage as part of its community briefing series, which seeks to promote transparency. The released footage consists of the traffic stop, chase on Silver Spring and crash at a gas station that ended with an officer shooting a gun-wielding suspect, according to police.

The officer involved is still on administrative leave as the Waukesha Police Department investigates the Feb. 21 shooting, police said.

It happened after an officer pulled over a sedan for traveling without plates, police said. Soon after the first officer approached the car, however, the driver sped off, the footage showed. Eventually, another officer encountered the fleeing suspect traveling west on Silver Spring Drive, the footage showed. The chase continued for over a dozen blocks until the suspect crashed into a bystander's vehicle, according to police and the footage.

Soon after the crash, a suspect got out of the car and ran across a gas station parking lot while police followed, the footage showed. Eventually, an officer who was running after the suspect fired several shots, and the suspect was later pronounced dead, the footage showed.

After shooting the suspect, officers tried to save his life, but the 31-year-old died at the scene, police said. Footage at one point showed an officer performing chest compressions on the suspect. No officers were injured in the encounter.

Police recovered a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun from the suspect, MPD Inspector Craig Sarnow said in the briefing video.
