Man Shot By UWM Cop Had Weapon: Police

Police say the man shot by a university police officer Tuesday morning had a weapon on him after being discovered sleeping in a building.

MILWAUKEE, WI β€” The man shot by a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee police officer Tuesday morning had a weapon on him and was fighting police when he was shot, according to police. It started when police got a call about a man sleeping in the Fine Arts building.

When police arrived, they found a man, later determined not to be a student or school employee, and "a physical altercation took place," police said in a tweet. "Officers discovered the man had a weapon and shot him during the altercation."

The officers then administered first aid, police say. The man was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.
