Man Shot After Argument Near UW-Milwaukee Off-Campus Dorm: Police

Police said a man was shot Friday after an argument across the street from UW-Milwaukee's Cambridge Commons dorms.

MILWAUKEE, WI — A 36-year-old man was shot Friday in an argument across the street from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Cambridge Commons Residence Halls, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.

Nobody from UWM was involved in the shooting, which happened at a nearby business 1.8 miles away from the central campus, the university said in a statement to Twitter. The Milwaukee man who was shot was brought to a local hospital and expected to survive, but nobody has been arrested, police said.

Police said it happened around 12:15 p.m. in the 1500 block of East Thomas Avenue, which is a block north of North Avenue and in between Newhall and Cambridge Avenues. The university said police officers are at Cambridge Commons as a resource for students after the shooting.

UWM police on Friday afternoon asked people to avoid the area after the shooting was reported. A tweet from the agency noted a white SUV may have been involved.

"This is an upsetting incident, and we encourage students to make use of counseling services available through the UWM Student Health and Wellness Center if needed," UWM said in a tweet, "employees are encouraged to seek out support through the EAP program in the Department of Human Resources."

The shooting comes after an incident on March 16 where a man with a gun was seen inside Golda Meir Library at the university's main campus, according to a report by The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Police said they arrested the man off-campus, the Journal Sentinel reported.

In January, two students were robbed at gunpoint in front of the 2323 N. Cambridge Avenue dorms, though nobody was injured, according to police.
